GEORGE MEADE DOCUMENTS

This collection of rare documents from George Meade comprises:

1) Three-page letter signed, written on bifolium stationery titled "Headquarters, Army of the Potomac", Feb. 16,1865, from Meade to President Lincoln. The letter, signed "Geo. G. Meade/ Maj. Genl. U.S.A./ Comdr A.P.", deals with the impending execution of Private George W. Brown (or George Rock or George Rock Brown), Co. A, 15th N.Y. Engineers for an unspecified offense. The execution was suspended several times, including once "in obedience to a telegram of this date from the President", but since no person of that name under sentence can be found in that company, the matter has been forwarded to the judge advocate general.

2) Three-page letter written on two separate sheets of lined paper, Fort Sill, Dakota Territory, June 18, 1870, from O. D. Ludley to "Meade". He reports on Indians affairs and the quiet before the storm. "... should the storm come we are ready for it. All the wild Indians have left. Cheyenne and those who remain could not be driven away, and of course nothing can be feared from them... Three companies of the 13th Inf. passed down today... They had a little fight with the 'nomads' the day the 7th arrived and so they were christened at once. Parsons killed one of the braves and scalped him, therefore returning evil with evil which I think is right.... Better not tell them [our Eastern friends] or an indignation meeting might be the up shot." Several deserters were caught and placed in the guard house which is full.

3) Two-page autographed letter signed on "Headquarters, Military Division of the Atlantic" stationery, Philadelphia, July 6, 1870, from Meade to Horton. He invites him for a visit and includes the aforementioned letter from Ludley. "...perhaps you would like to know of what they are doing at Sill." Together with an engraved CDV and book plate.
