SLAVERY DOCUMENTS

This collection includes:

1.) A 7½" x 5" list of "land with improvements and slaves owned by William Erwin." April 1, 1845, Washington County, Virginia. Five slaves are listed by sex and valued at $1,050 in the aggregate.

2) Stampless cover, Feb. 24, 1824, written by James M. Garnett to Congressman Robert S. Garnett of Virginia regarding legislation and the publication of an article on the tariff. A postscript reads, in part: "On Saturday last, a Negro Woman of mine, about 35 or 36 years of age, was safely delivered of 2 sons & a Daughter at one birth. The parties all continue very well."

3) Two-page stampless cover, Warren, April 2, 1825, written by Charles Collin to Edward Spaulding in Matanse, Cuba. This concerns a coffee plantation in Cuba. "I will ask Mr. Anthony to make a statement of the affairs of the Mount Hope - a list of his people - Male, Female, Creole & c. - the state of health, the deaths, births & c. since his administration commenced." There are some cryptic references to the "Bristol Boys", the "Bristol transaction" as well as the great misfortune of "Friend Latting". A reference to Captain Greene's arrival after a 90-day passage makes us wonder about the nature of this business and its legitimacy. Certainly worthy of further research.
